A list of our favorite read-aloud books for Lent, listed basically in the order we would read them as Lent unfolds and Easter approaches.
The Story of the Cross: The Stations of the Cross for Children by Mary Joslin
The Way of the Cross by Caryll Houselander (for teenagers — yes, you can read aloud with teens!)
Benjamin’s Box: The Story of the Resurrection Eggs by Melody Carlson (small children). I use this story along with a box of items that relate to each page in the story: donkey, coins, small cup, twig, leather strip (an old dog collar), thorn, nail, die and spear. You can buy the items in a kit but I put them together myself with things I had around the house. Each page of the story is about one object in the box.
Song of the Swallows by Leo Politti. For the Feast of St. Joseph, March 19th. Tells the miracle that occurred at the Mission San Juan Capistrano on the Feast of St. Joseph.
The Spear by Louis de Wohl (for older kids)
The Story of the Easter Robin by Dandi Daley Mackall
The Easter Story by Brian Wildsmith
